5 ways to find a Mental Health Professional
Oct 09, 2023As World Mental Health Day is tomorrow, it’s a good time to talk about how getting professional help. In this blog post, we'll explore the invaluable role of mental health professionals and five ways to find them.
I'll let you in on a secret. No one, and I mean no one, has all the strategies, tools, and coping mechanisms to face chronic illness alone! I certainly didn't, and I've never met anyone who has. This is where a professional comes in, someone who is trained in all the strategies, tools, and coping mechanisms you need. A mental health professional, or as I like to call them - Mind Benders - have the tools you're going to need in your toolkit to ace this.
Myth debunked
First and foremost, let's debunk a common myth: seeking out a mental health professional is not a sign of weakness. You wouldn't become a professional athlete without a coach, would you? Hell no, you'd get the best damn coach you could! So why on earth would you think that you don't need a mental health professional to get you through life with chronic illness? You do!
Your Support System
While your friends and family may be your biggest supporters, they might not always fully understand the unique challenges of chronic illness. They may also have their concerns and emotions to manage. Do them a favor and go see a Mind Bender. It is literally their job to listen to all your thoughts and feelings and work with you to build practical strategies, tools, and coping mechanisms.
No ifs or buts
If you're still on the fence about seeking the support of a Mind Bender, consider this: managing chronic illness is an ongoing journey, and having a professional by your side can make all the difference. There's no valid reason not to explore this valuable resource. So, take the leap and get yourself a Mind Bender!
Here are four easy ways to find one.
1. Emergency Support
In times of crisis or overwhelming emotions, it's crucial to know where to turn. Several organizations provide free, 24-hour support for those in need. Here are some numbers you can call:
- LifeLine: 13 11 14
- Sane: 1800 18 7263
- Beyond Blue: 1300 22 4636
- MensLine: 1300 789 978
- Suicide Call Back Service: 1300 659 467
2. Mental Health Care Plan
If your General Practitioner (GP) or specialist diagnoses you with a mental health condition, they can create a special Mental Health Care Treatment Plan with you for treatment options and support services. This plan includes a set number of sessions with a Mental Health Professional.
The plan is not a blank cheque to see any Mind Bender. Each Mind Bender sets their own fees, so Medicare may only cover some of the cost. Ask how much you'll pay and what you'll get back from Medicare when you make your appointment.
3. Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
I love EAP! It’s free access to a Mind Bender through your workplace. Each workplace arranges EAP their own way. The suite of services by any EAP will include free Mind Bender sessions for you and your family (separately or together). Some EAPs also offer career coaching, support for managers, financial counselling, and more.
To find out if you have access check your work’s intranet, call Human Resources, or ask around. It’s free and confidential. Whatever you say to them, they won’t pass it on to your employer, it’s just between you and them.
4. Charities
Charities play a crucial role in supporting individuals with chronic illnesses, including mental health care. Many have dedicated mental health professionals to help you cope with the unique challenges of chronic illness. These services are often offered at little to no cost, providing accessible support during times of stress. If they don't have a dedicated service, many can direct you to the right support for your condition. To learn more about mental health support through Charities, such as HeartKids, simply search online or contact established organisations in the chronic illness and mental health space.
5. Finding Your Own Mind Bender
If you prefer to find a Mind Bender on your own, you can use the national database of counsellors available at Australian Health Services. While this approach may require some research and consideration, don't let it deter you. Many have found life-changing support by seeking out counsellors through word-of-mouth recommendations.
Wrapping Up
As you navigate the complexities of chronic illness, remember that you don't have to do it alone. Mind Benders, the dedicated mental health professionals, are here to empower you with the strategies, tools, and coping mechanisms you need. Seeking their support is not a sign of weakness; it's a powerful step towards effectively managing chronic illness and living a fulfilling life. So, take that step and ensure you have the support you deserve on this journey.
