Who Am I Even? The Chronic Illness Identity Crisis
Apr 15, 2024Living with chronic illness is a journey of constant adaptation and evolution, and nowhere is this more evident than for your personal identity.
Identity is not a fixed construct but rather a fluid and dynamic concept that continues to evolve over time, shaped by our experiences, relationships, and inner growth. When confronted with the challenges of chronic illness, our sense of self undergoes profound shifts, challenging us to redefine who we are and what we are capable of.
Identity as a Journey, Not a Destination
One of the most important truths to recognise when grappling with chronic illness is that identity is not static. It is not a set of rigid labels or predefined roles but rather a journey of self-discovery and growth. As we navigate the highs and lows of our health, our identity evolves in response to the changing landscape of our lives.
Identity as a Constant Companion
For those born with a lifelong chronic illness, like my congenital heart disease, it can feel like your condition is ingrained into the very fabric of who you are. From an early age, you learn to adapt, accommodate, and overcome the challenges posed by your health. Your identity becomes intertwined with your illness, shaping your perceptions, priorities, and daily life.
Recently Diagnosed: Navigating the Unknown
Receiving a chronic illness diagnosis can feel like a seismic shift, altering the path of your life in unexpected ways. Suddenly, you're faced with a new identity as a "patient" or "chronically ill," terms that may feel foreign and unsettling. It's natural to grapple with feelings of fear, confusion, and uncertainty as you work your way through this. There can also be grief for your old identity, as the new one may not be one you chose or want.
Flare-ups: Challenges and Resilience
Flare-ups are an inevitable part of living with chronic illness, bringing with them a mix of physical and emotional challenges. During these periods, your identity may feel temporarily eclipsed by pain, fatigue, and limitations. Activities you once enjoyed may suddenly become inaccessible, leading to feelings of frustration and isolation.
Healthy Periods: Embracing Possibilities
Despite the challenges of chronic illness, there are moments of respite and relief when symptoms are manageable, and energy levels are high. During these periods of wellness, your identity may undergo a subtle yet profound shift as you rediscover a sense of agency, autonomy, and empowerment.
Others’ Perceptions of Your Identity
As much as we like to determine our own identity, the reality is that others will quickly decide for themselves what identity they see for you. This means that deciding whether to disclose your chronic illness to others may make you think twice. Sharing your illness may lead to a deeper understanding of your experiences and foster connections based on empathy and support. However, there's also the risk that others may misunderstand or oversimplify your illness, viewing it as a defining aspect of who you are rather than recognising the multifaceted nature of your identity. Moreover, some people may struggle to comprehend the challenges you face. It’s a complex choice whether to share or discuss your illness and how it may be perceived.
Embracing Change and Evolution
At the end of the day, our identities are continually shaped and reshaped by our experiences. We may find ourselves adopting new roles, such as "patient advocate" or "chronic illness warrior," as we learn to navigate the complexities of the healthcare system and advocate for our own needs. Similarly, our priorities, goals, and aspirations may shift as find new ways to thrive.
It's essential to embrace these changes and recognise that they are a natural part of the process. Rather than clinging to outdated notions of who we should be, we must allow ourselves the freedom to evolve and grow in response to our circumstances. This might involve letting go of old identities that no longer serve us and embracing new ones that better reflect our current reality.
When to get Professional Help
There is a natural level of identity confusion that we all have. But, if you're experiencing persistent confusion, self-doubt, or symptoms of depression or anxiety related to identity, seeking help from a therapist or counsellor can provide support and guidance to navigate these challenges effectively. How your chronic illness is or isn’t part of your identity is complex and seeking help from a professional to unpack it and construct who want to be is a great thing to do (I’ve done it!).
Wrap Up
Navigating the journey of chronic illness and identity is deeply personal and multifaceted. Some days, our illness may feel like an integral part of who we are, shaping our perceptions, priorities, and daily experiences. Other days, it may fade into the background as we focus on other aspects of our identity and life. Both experiences are valid and worthy of acknowledgment. It's essential to recognise that our identity is fluid and ever-evolving, influenced by lots of factors, including our health, relationships, and personal growth. Embracing the complexity of our identity means honouring the highs and lows, the strengths and vulnerabilities, and allowing ourselves the freedom to navigate the journey with compassion and authenticity. Whether our chronic illness feels like a small part or a significant aspect of our identity on any given day, both experiences contribute to who we are.
