I won’t be travelling for Christmas without these…
Nov 27, 2023Travelling when you live with chronic illness requires a bit more planning, but it doesn't mean you can't travel well. As the founder of Adulting Well and someone who understands the unique challenges of chronic illness, I'm here to share my top 5 must-have travel items that have been game-changers for me. Let's dive in!
Sun Protection Essentials:
So, I don’t think I’ve mentioned this yet. In addition to my congenital heart disease, I also have Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP). EPP is basically a severe allergy to the sun, where if I’m in direct sunlight for a short amount of time my hands and feet swell and blister. It hurts, a lot!
In fancy speak, EPP is a rare genetic disorder characterised by a deficiency in the enzyme ferrochelatase, leading to the accumulation of protoporphyrin IX in the body. When exposed to sunlight, this accumulation causes rapid and severe phototoxic reactions in the skin, resulting in intense pain, burning sensations, and swelling.
For me, the phototoxic reactions are felt the most on my hands and feet. There has never been a cure. Scientists are working on a temporary reprieve, but at this stage there is only a very very expensive drug that is taken every second month. When I say expensive, I mean like $20k+ every second month. So that would be $120,000+ each year! No thanks.
Until science figures out how to make the meds cheaper, the only thing I can do is to prevent the reaction in the first place. This means staying out of the sun or making sure my hands and feet are covered. Sound sexy, right!
I never leave home without sunscreen, hats, gloves, and enclosed shoes. Can you believe I married the surf live saver! I can’t go to the beach, unless its overcast, but then it will be too cold to go in the water with my CHD and poor circulation…
I was only diagnosed with EPP when I was 21 and don’t mention it much as it’s the lesser of my chronic illnesses. But, with both chronic illnesses adaptability is the key!
Compression Socks for Comfortable Travels:
Long drives or flights can be challenging for anyone, but for those with chronic illnesses, the risk of blood clots and swelling is a real concern. Enter compression socks – my travel companions for comfort and health. These socks provide the support my legs need, ensuring I arrive at my destination feeling refreshed and ready for whatever comes my way.
Sleep Essentials: Eye Mask and Ear Plugs:
Quality sleep is a non-negotiable aspect of Adulting Well, especially when I’m on the move. An eye mask and ear plugs become my best friends in creating a sleep-conducive environment, regardless of where I am. Block out the distractions, embrace the cocoon of tranquillity, and prioritise your well-being by ensuring a good night's sleep during your travels.
Earphones for Meditation on the Go:
Maintaining my mental well-being while traveling is crucial. Earphones are not just for tuning out the noise; they're my ticket to maintaining mindfulness practices on the go. Whether it's meditation, calming music, or soothing affirmations, these earphones keep me connected to my well-being rituals.
I also love wireless headphones! Over the decades, being in and out of the hospital, I discovered that headphone cords triggered flashbacks to being hooked up to all the tubes and wires. Although I’ve worked through this with my therapist over the years, I will still go for cordless headphones every day of the week!
Stay Hydrated with a Reusable Water Bottle:
Hydration is the foundation of well-being, and a reusable water bottle is a must-have. I try stay refreshed, support my overall health, and reduce environmental impact by carrying my own water bottle. Whether I’m exploring the urban landscape or venturing into the great outdoors, having access to water at all times ensures I can focus on the adventure, not the logistics. Plus, staying hydrated is a huge help for both my chronic conditions.
Traveling with a chronic illness means having to think things through a little bit more than others. Over the decades, I’ve been narrowing down my must haves and these are definitely the top five. Sure there are the no-brainers like packing meds and undies, but these five make live just that little bit easier meaning I can relax and have more FUN. Which is what life is all about.
Pack smart, travel well, and embrace the adventures that await!
