What I Won't Be Leaving Home Without When Travelling to the USA

Aug 25, 2024

In exactly a fortnight, I’ll be heading to the USA for two significant speaking engagements. First, I’ll be presenting at the Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Outcome Collaborative (CNOC) in St. Louis, Missouri, an event that brings together experts, researchers, and advocates dedicated to improving outcomes for those with congenital heart disease (CHD) (my chronic illness). My focus will be on adult congenital heart disease and mental health, sharing insights from both my personal journey and professional experience.

Following that, I’ll be speaking at the Heart and Mind Wellbeing Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. I’m especially excited about this because the Center is run by the amazing Australian Dr. Nadine Kasparian. In this talk, I’ll be focusing on how to live well with chronic illness, highlighting practical strategies and mindset shifts that can help people lead fulfilling lives despite their health challenges.

Additionally, in both talks I’ll be sharing the importance of the new Australian National Standards of Care for Childhood Onset Heart Disease, which include the world’s first standards on mental health and neurodevelopmental care—standards developed under the leadership of Dr. Kasparian.

This trip isn’t just about sharing my knowledge and experiences; it’s also about shedding light on the realities of living with a lifelong chronic illness, one that has no cure. I’m hoping to emphasise how critical mental health is in this journey and to explore practical ways we can all live well with our health challenges. These also happen to be the foundations of Adulting Well.

As someone living with chronic illness myself, I know that travelling requires extra planning and preparation. It’s all about ensuring I have everything I need to stay healthy, comfortable, and focused on the work ahead. Here’s a list of essentials that I absolutely won’t be leaving home without.

  1. Medications and Documentation
I always make sure to pack my medications, and plenty of them. Running out while overseas isn’t an option! Alongside my meds, I’ll have a letter from my pharmacist outlining exactly what I’m taking. This not only helps with any potential issues at US Border Security but also provides peace of mind in case I need to explain anything at a moment’s notice.
  2. Layers of Clothes
The unpredictable nature of travel, especially with varying climates and the chill of air-conditioned spaces, means layering is a must. I’ll be packing light, breathable layers that can be easily added or removed depending on the temperature. This is especially important when managing energy levels and comfort, as even small fluctuations in temperature can make a big difference in whether I’m blue or rosie pink.
  3. My Sleep Kit
Sleep is crucial when managing a chronic illness, so I always travel with a dedicated sleep kit. For me, this includes an eye mask, earplugs, a comfortable neck pillow, and sleep meditation. I’ve also got a routine I use everywhere to create a calming bedtime, no matter where I am.
  4. Headphones for Meditation and Entertainment
Whether it’s to tune into a guided meditation or simply relax with a favourite podcast or playlist, my headphones are an essential travel companion. They’re perfect for blocking out the noise of busy airports and helping me manage stress and fatigue while on the move.
  5. Indigenous Thank You Gifts for My Hosts
As a guest speaker, I like to bring a piece of home with me to show my gratitude. This time, I’ve chosen some beautiful Indigenous gifts that reflect Australia’s rich cultural heritage. It’s a small way to say thank you to my hosts and to share something special from my country. I’m also doing a road trip from Missouri to Ohio, so will have a few local delicacies with me, like Iced Vovo biscuits and Tim Tams.
  6. My Book!
Of course, I won’t be leaving home without a few copies of my book, Your Ultimate Surgery Success Guide. Whether it’s sharing it with someone who might find it useful or just having it on hand to show others what I’m passionate about, my book is coming along for the ride.
  7. Comprehensive Travel Insurance
One of the most important things I ensure before any trip is having comprehensive travel insurance that specifically covers my health conditions. This provides peace of mind, knowing that I’m protected in case of any medical emergencies while abroad. I make sure the policy covers everything from hospital stays to medication replacement, just in case. It is more expensive, but worth the investment.
  8. Copies of Important Documents
In addition to my passport and visa, I carry copies of all important documents, including my health records, travel itinerary, and emergency contact information. I keep both physical copies and digital backups in a secure, accessible location. This is a small step that can save a lot of trouble if anything goes missing.
  9. Snacks and Hydration Supplies
Travel can be unpredictable, and having a stash of snacks is essential. I also pack a reusable water bottle, which I can refill once I’m through security. Staying hydrated is key, especially when managing chronic illness, and having familiar snacks on hand helps me maintain energy levels. I don’t want to be hangry at an event (and I’m sure no one wants me to be either!).

Travelling with a chronic illness can be challenging, but with the right preparation, it’s doable. As I gear up for this trip, I hope these tips help others with chronic conditions feel more confident and ready for their own adventures. Here’s to a successful trip and to sharing what I’ve learned with the world!
